A Guide to Wood Floor Cleaning & Maintenance

Given how beautiful wood flooring looks, and just how much character it adds to your home, you’ll want to take care of it in the best way you can. Not just to keep it looking great, but to extend its lifespan too.

Not a problem. Read on to learn how to clean wood floors and look after them in the long run.

Day to day care

First and foremost, you’ll want to clean your wood floors either daily or weekly depending on their use. Areas with high footfall like shop floors or kitchens will need to be cleaned two or three times a week, at least, to keep them looking great. On the other hand, a sitting room that’s only used in the evenings will usually be fine with a weekly clean.

To get a better finish when cleaning with a mop, it’s worth sweeping the floors first to remove any particles, dust or hairs. When it comes to actually cleaning the floor, the best thing to use is a microfibre spray mop. At Greyspace Flooring, we stock Bona and Osmo spray mops in our showroom, which are specifically designed for use on wood floors.

If you want to mop or sanitise the floor, use a very small amount of chemical (not bleach) with as little water as you can on the floor itself. Ensure the room is well ventilated to allow the floor to dry quickly and avoid leaving standing water on the floor for long periods.

Refreshing the finish

For less frequent floor care, you can buy wood floor polishers. These products contain maintenance oils that refresh the wood’s oil finish. Again, the frequency will depend on the usage of the floor. As a rule of thumb, we would recommend using wood floor polishers once every 18 months, or whenever you think the floor is looking a little worn.

If you want to truly refresh the appearance and condition of your flooring, we offer a full clean and refresh service. Our team will perform a full deep clean of the wooden flooring which removes around 30-50% of the oil coating. We’ll then reapply the coating to give your floors a clean, fresh, ‘good as new’ look.

What about restoration?

In most cases, a deep clean and refresh will get your floors back to their best. However, if you feel that your floor looks worn and has lost its charm, then you can opt for a full sand and restoration.

That said, this isn’t usually required until at least 10 years after installation. Of course, it depends on how much the floor is used. Particularly high-footfall areas like shop floors or hallways could benefit from a restoration after 5 years, for example.
